Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdrey were translating the Book of Mormon and they came across the instructions in the translation from Jesus Christ that all needed baptism. They lived at Harmony, Pennsylvania next to the Susquehanna River and after receiving a visit and the authority from the resurrected John the Baptist, they entered the water and baptized each other.
